Greed at the Edge of the Abyss

I don’t know what word in the English language applies to people who are willing to sacrifice the literal existence of organized human life just to pad a few more dollars into already overstuffed pockets. The word “evil” doesn’t even come close. It’s too simplistic, too shallow for the sheer depth of this betrayal.

We’re talking about a special brand of cruelty, one that operates with a calculated precision and a cold, brutal indifference. These aren’t people with convictions or ideals. These are predators that haunt the corridors of power and commerce, their hands dripping with the spoils of a dying planet. To them, the future doesn’t matter. Not the air we breathe, not the water we drink, not the communities that stitch together the fabric of humanity.

This is greed stripped down to its naked core. Not the kind that covets a new car or a second vacation home, but the kind that threatens the very continuity of life itself. These creatures would burn down the forests, poison the oceans, and watch glaciers dissolve into the rising seas — all for the faint jangle of coins and the meaningless accumulation of numbers in a digital ledger.

If we don’t call this out, if we don’t stand in defiance, what are we? Just witness to our own extinction? There must be a word for this, some new term that captures the monstrous nature of those who can bear to kill the future for a moment of gain.

But until we have that word, one thing is certain: silence is complicity.
