Telford was born in Toronto in 1977 and grew up in the suburb of Etobicoke. She attended the University of Ottawa and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Victoria.

Career in Politics

Telford’s career in politics began in the early 2000s when she worked for the Liberal Party of Canada. She then worked as a consultant for the public relations firm, StrategyCorp, before returning to politics in 2013 as the Deputy Chief of Staff to Justin Trudeau, who was then the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

In 2015, when Trudeau became the Prime Minister of Canada, Telford was appointed as his Chief of Staff, making her one of the most powerful women in Canadian politics. She has since been credited with playing a key role in the successful election campaign of the Liberal Party in 2015 and 2019.

Telford was criticized for not taking stronger action to address the issue.

In 2021, Telford faced further controversy when it was revealed that she knew about an allegation of sexual misconduct against the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Jonathan Vance, but failed to take action. Telford was accused of prioritizing the reputation of the Liberal Party over the safety of women in the military.
